CHAPTER
Gilbert slept alone the Sunday night after Tiffanyâs most recent article appeared in the Allentown Times Herald. Tiffany had made an abrupt decision to leave town to visit her parents in Pittsburgh for the weekend, explaining that it had been a long time since she had seen them. Unaware of the death threats she had received, Gilbert merely suspected she was tired of the media attention and didnât want to face the flack her most recent words on the subject of corruption in the medical device industry would summon forth, at least not at close range.
âBe careful what you wish for, Tiffany,â Gilbert had wanted to tell her, never actually saying the words he knew would throw her into a snit. Tiffany could run, but she could not hide.
It hadnât been a good sleep for Gilbert. He had been awakened several times with nightmares, none of which required Sigmund Freud to interpret. They all involved him, and sometimes Tiffany, being forced by a dark figure to walk on a tightrope that stretched out over a vast chasm, the bottom of which was heavily populated by flesh-eating demons who looked up with bloodshot eyes, waiting impatiently for their prey to lose their balance and fall into their clutches so they could rip them apart.
Gilbert was dreading his morning appointment on this dreary Monday: a follow-up visit with his new attorney. Tiffany had finally convinced him to seek legal counsel to help him handle the blowback from her exposé, and to see if the whistleblower aspect of the case had legs. Ray had consulted with friends and colleagues, scouring legal directories until he had come up with the name of a personal injury attorney he thought he could trust. It had taken several days for Gilbert to summon up the energy to call Nicky Toscano for that initial appointment.
Gilbert had been prepared to take an immediate dislike to Toscano. Though universally lauded as highly competent and successful, Gilberthe would be be just another smart-ass lawyer with an attitude. Even worse, most of Toscanoâs work was for plaintiffs. And even though Gilbert had been assured by people he trusted that Toscano was a man of principle, the idea that he had made a small fortune taking physicians to the woodshed was difficult for Gilbert to swallow. His appearance didnât help. From photos that Gilbert had found on the internet and what others had told him, Toscano was a little guy who did everything he could to compensate for his small stature, including body building, dressing expensively, and making sure his jet-black hair, sculpted goatee, and manicured nails were trimmed perfectly, no matter the occasion.
What Gilbert couldnât know, at least not yet, was that Toscanoâs law offices were like his appearanceâmeticulously maintained. Toscano insisted that all the associates and paralegals he brought into his solo practice maintain their offices and desks in perfect order. Nothing out of place or askew. Never.
And similarly, the client cases and files. Toscano was a stickler for details and
