CHAPTER

Gilbert slept alone the Sunday night after Tiffany’s most recent article appeared in the Allentown Times Herald. Tiffany had made an abrupt decision to leave town to visit her parents in Pittsburgh for the weekend, explaining that it had been a long time since she had seen them. Unaware of the death threats she had received, Gilbert merely suspected she was tired of the media attention and didn’t want to face the flack her most recent words on the subject of corruption in the medical device industry would summon forth, at least not at close range.

“Be careful what you wish for, Tiffany,” Gilbert had wanted to tell her, never actually saying the words he knew would throw her into a snit. Tiffany could run, but she could not hide.

It hadn’t been a good sleep for Gilbert. He had been awakened several times with nightmares, none of which required Sigmund Freud to interpret. They all involved him, and sometimes Tiffany, being forced by a dark figure to walk on a tightrope that stretched out over a vast chasm, the bottom of which was heavily populated by flesh-eating demons who looked up with bloodshot eyes, waiting impatiently for their prey to lose their balance and fall into their clutches so they could rip them apart.

Even worse, most of Toscano’s work was for plaintiffs. And even though Gilbert had been assured by people he trusted that Toscano was a man of principle, the idea that he had made a small fortune taking physicians to the woodshed was difficult for Gilbert to swallow. His appearance didn’t help. From photos that Gilbert had found on the internet and what others had told him, Toscano was a little guy who did everything he could to compensate for his small stature, including body building, dressing expensively, and making sure his jet-black hair, sculpted goatee, and manicured nails were trimmed perfectly, no matter the occasion.

What Gilbert couldn’t know, at least not yet, was that Toscano’s law offices were like his appearance—meticulously maintained. Toscano insisted that all the associates and paralegals he brought into his solo practice maintain their offices and desks in perfect order. Nothing out of place or askew. Never.

And similarly, the client cases and files. Toscano was a stickler for details and
